Overcoming Lifelong Depression Through Powerlifting

I have suffered from depression almost my whole life.

My life turned around 3 years ago. Somehow I tore my meniscus and ended up in Physical Therapy. I thought my PT was crazy when he told me I was going to deadlift, it was one month before my 66th birthday.

Discovering a newfound strength at the gym

It turns, my physical therapist wasn't crazy at all. Suddenly I felt strong and capable and confident. When I finished PT I joined a barbell club and took up powerlifting. Previously, I had avoided most physical activity due to poor vision and illness. The gym became an essential coping tool, giving me so much confidence, keeping me active physically and emotionally. Plus, I made new friends.

Reducing medication and giving back to the community

The mental health benefits of this shift have been profound. Since finding powerlifting, I have been able to work alongside my doctor to cut my depression medication to 1/3rd of what I was taking. I now volunteer teaching young women to lift and help a friend with her gym wear brand.

I wear the motto "you did not wake up today to be a weak ass bitch" almost every day it reminds me it is never too late to reinvent myself and strength is both mental and physical.
