Beyond the Surface: The Lasting Impact of Childhood Trauma

Many articles about depression feel misleading because they often overlook the deep-seated roots of the pain. My own journey began with profound loss at a young age when I lost my sister to leukemia. Following that tragedy, I faced further violation and was placed in the care of a child psychologist, marking the beginning of a long struggle.

To truly understand depression, we must look deeper at how severe childhood trauma—including neglect, abuse, and being emotionally outcasted or compared to others—shapes a person’s life into adulthood. These experiences leave us feeling inferior and unseen. We must learn to truly listen to one another. So many of us hide our past and our pain simply because, as children, no one listened to us, and that pattern of silence has continued into our adult lives. It is time we change that.
